David W Orr’s article, Love It or Lose It: The Coming Biophilia Revolution was very interesting to read. Most people know in order to keep their household pet alive they need to care for it by grooming it, feeding it, and giving it positive attention. Well, the earth needs the same care in order for to stay alive and provide for us as its guests. Many people have what is called Biophobia where they do not go and tend to nature; they stay in their urban areas and concrete jungles. Many people with biophobia may like the idea of nature but they do not physically do anything to help nature. For every biophobe more work is placed on those who love the earth, Biophiliacs.
There is almost nothing natural about our Earth today. Humans have walked around on it and have bullied it for centuries. We have introduced new plants and animals to different countries that would not have ever been there if it was not for us. These introductions in some cases are good to preserve the nature that was already in place, but most of the time this is not the case and the new plants and animals become invasive and take over that specific region. If we really get technical about invasive species for a moment we can come to the conclusion that we as human beings are in fact invasive. In the past we believed we had to conquer every piece of land in sight and we traveled everywhere to do so. There is almost no where on this great Earth that has not been impacted by human activity in one way, shape, or another.
Those who are biophiliacs deserve a lot of credit for caring for the earth when others do not. I would like to say that I am a biophiliac but I do not believe I truly am. I recycle and pick up trash off the sidewalks and I turn off lights and appliances when they are not in use. I do not hike into nature and replenish it like biophiliacs do, but I would not consider myself to be a biophobe either, I like to go on runs outside and watch the birds and trees move as I run past them. All in all to save this earth so that it can provide for us what we need we need to give it attention and most of all we need to love it.
