The Land Ethic -- Aldo Leopold

The Land Ethic by Aldo Leopold, brought to my attention that most of what we do with the land the earth has so willingly provided us is for economic use and not to keep nature as pristine as it was to begin with. We farm to gain an income only to better our selfish lives. Most do not farm because they simply would like to feed the hungry and the surrounding community. We are taking this vast earth for granted and it is not acceptable by any means. By all that we have built and removed from the earth we are beginning to see consequences such as erosion and flooding.
It may seem from time to time that we are slaves to the earth to get as much product as we can get from it, but in reality the earth is a slave to mankind. We take and take and take what we need and what we want for the earth that we do not give much back to it. The earth has become our slave to provide as much as it can give to us.
Ethics should not have to written to be obeyed, they should be common sense. We should not have to have written rules or laws stating why and how we should use our land but since we cannot seem to act mature about using it, we probably should. Bringing more environmental education into schools and work areas should help us come to terms with this idea, so that we can come up with a better way of treating our earth and to provide for a better future.
